A Practical WordPress Content Refresh Workflow: Choose, Audit, Update

Use a repeatable editorial review to decide what needs attention, check on-page details and improve an existing WordPress archive.

Publishing more articles is only one way to work on a content business. An existing archive also needs maintenance: outdated product details, unclear headings, missing image descriptions and neglected internal links can all deserve attention.

A useful review process separates two questions: which pages should you inspect next, and what should you check when you open them?

Commercial disclosure: Content Freshness Checker and SEO Content Audit Block are paid products from our own Empire Publishing Tools portfolio. They support an editorial workflow; they do not automatically create income or guarantee search rankings.

1. Build a manageable review list

Start with a small set of pages you can review properly. Consider business relevance, factual sensitivity, and how quickly the topic changes. A dated software tutorial and an evergreen explanation may need different review schedules.

Content Freshness Checker gives WordPress content a freshness score based on age and update history. Pro adds niche-specific decay profiles, category mappings and email digests. The score is a prompt to investigate, not proof that an article is wrong.

Check the oldest or most important items first. If the content remains accurate, record that review rather than changing its date just to make it look newer.

2. Inspect the page, not just its score

Read the article as a visitor would. Does it answer the question in the title? Are examples still relevant? Can a reader understand the next step? Check factual claims against appropriate sources before changing them.

SEO Content Audit Block brings twelve weighted on-page checks into a WordPress dashboard. It inspects items such as titles, descriptions, headings, image alt text and links. Pro includes bulk audits, CSV exports, scheduled re-audits, email digests and custom scoring weights.

A score is an editorial aid, not a search engine’s ranking formula. A page may need stronger explanations even when a checklist looks healthy. It may also be short because a short answer is appropriate.

3. Make a focused update

  • Replace outdated details with verified information.
  • Clarify headings and remove repeated explanations.
  • Add image descriptions that describe the image honestly.
  • Repair broken links and add relevant internal references.
  • Keep affiliate disclosures, forms and working purchase links intact.

If you use AI to help draft a revision, check every factual addition and read the result as an editor. Neither of these plugins is an automatic fact-checker or content-rewriting service.

4. Verify and record the result

Preview the update on desktop and mobile, check its links, and record what changed. Re-audit the page as a consistency check, then use your existing analytics and search reports to evaluate outcomes over time. Keep observed changes separate from assumptions about what caused them.

Choose the tool for your bottleneck

Choose Content Freshness Checker if your main problem is deciding what to revisit: $79 USD per year for one website. Choose SEO Content Audit Block if you need repeatable on-page reviews: $69 USD per year for one website. You can buy either separately; no bundle is required.

Prices exclude applicable taxes. Both are annual subscriptions through Freemius. Review the current renewal and refund terms at checkout, and test new plugins on a staging copy before using them on a live site.
