When retiring a page, begin with the reader's destination. Find a relevant replacement that is already public and useful. Redirecting every missing URL to a home page does not answer the original question, and a redirect cannot repair missing content by itself.
Create a short list of old paths and the intended replacements. Check each old path before making a rule: if it already serves a working page, decide whether that page should remain. Check the destination independently and avoid sending visitors through several redirects before they reach it.
Disclosure: We publish WP Safe Redirect Map through Empire Publishing Tools. It is our paid plugin for a deliberately narrow workflow: exact-path redirects that act only after WordPress resolves a request as a 404. It does not take over existing working pages or replace a general redirect-management suite.
The plugin starts disabled and supports up to 100 rules. Its targets must be existing public, unprotected posts or pages on the same site. It rejects duplicate sources, loops, redirect chains and external destinations. Known competing redirect providers suppress its output, but custom theme or server rules still need a manual review.

Start your test with a temporary 302 redirect on a staging copy. Check the old path, the destination and an unrelated working page. Inspect the response status and location, then disable the rule and confirm that the original missing path is missing again. A permanent 301 response can remain cached outside WordPress after you change or disable the rule, so choose that status deliberately.
This release supports root-domain installations and simple lowercase paths. Requests with query strings or encoded paths are left untouched, as are administrative and checkout/account routes. The preview assumes a 404 request; it is not proof that a real request will be a 404. No visitor history is stored.
After a content change, revisit the destination. If it becomes private, password-protected or unpublished, the plugin stops serving that redirect. Keep your normal backups and document which system owns redirects on the site. Restoring the previous map leaves it disabled so you can review it before enabling output again.
The Pro plan costs $19 USD annually for one site, plus applicable taxes. An active license is required to save new rules and serve redirects; disabling and restoring remain available without entitlement. Review renewal and conditional refund terms before purchasing. Redirects do not guarantee search rankings, traffic or sales.
