A plugin cleanup can leave old shortcode text behind. Before replacing a form, gallery or content plugin, inspect where its shortcode names appear in saved posts and pages. A list of candidates gives you a useful starting point, but it cannot tell you which callbacks execute on every page.
Creator disclosure: WealthFromAI and Empire Publishing Tools are part of our own portfolio. This guide introduces our paid WP Shortcode Inventory plugin. It is not an independent review, and using it does not guarantee safer changes, higher rankings or more revenue.
Start with a narrow question. Identify the shortcode name from the provider's documentation or your content editor. Keep a backup and work on a staging copy. Record which rendered pages matter to your visitors before changing the provider. A shortcode can be registered conditionally, so an admin-request registration label is only a snapshot.
Review saved candidates in small batches. WP Shortcode Inventory adds a Tools screen for administrators. It reviews five posts or pages per screen and accepts an exact-name filter. Continue through the batches, inspect the source edit links and compare matches with the rendered page. Private and draft sources remain subject to edit permissions. The report shows names and counts, not attribute values or content excerpts.

Treat a match as a lead. A documentation example, HTML comment or attribute may contain shortcode-like text. Nested shortcode bodies are not expanded. The tool does not inspect templates, widgets or custom post types. It supports ASCII letter-leading names of up to 64 characters, using letters, digits, underscores and hyphens. Larger or differently formatted names need a separate manual review.
Respect the review limits. Each item is bounded to 200 KB, 50 distinct names and 100 matches. A partial status means you should investigate outside this view; a zero count never proves there are no dependencies. Filters apply to each five-item batch, rather than performing an unlimited whole-site search. The scanner never executes a shortcode callback, edits content, stores results or sends scanner network requests. Licensing uses Freemius separately.
Finish on staging. Change one provider at a time, view representative pages while logged out as well as logged in, and test the actual visitor actions. Keep the provider active until replacement behavior is verified. WP Shortcode Inventory Pro costs $19 USD per year for one website, with taxes where applicable and conditional 14-day refund terms at checkout. It requires WordPress 6.0+ and PHP 8.0+ and supports your review; it does not replace that final testing.
